Competency Statement Format

The format for competency statements should be as follows:

All statements: Remember the total word count for the goal is 200-500 words. That means for goal 1, each functional area must be approximately 75 - 150 words

Competency Statement 1 (or whatever number it is)

Safe (or whatever functional area it is)

My goal in the area of safe is.....
To accomplish my goal I do.... I provide... I make sure.... I check... ( all statements must be present tense. Do not use words like "will" "should" etc.)

Healthy
My goal in the area of healthy is....
To accomplish my goal I do.... I provide... etc.

Learning Environment
My goal in the area of learning environment is...
To accomplish my goal I do... I provide... I make sure.... etc.

FOR INFANT-TODDLER CREDENTIAL

If you are doing the infant-toddler credential each statement must include examples for each of three age levels:

For young infants I do.....
For mobile infants I do...
For toddlers I do...

Since the word count is the same, there isn't room for more than 1 or 2 brief examples for each
age group.

Infant-Toddler Example:

Competency Goal #1
To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment

Safe

My goal for young infants (birth to 8 months) is to follow safety procedures. I make sure that there are no small objects that the infants can put in their mouths and choke. I lay the babies on their backs when they sleep.

My goal for mobile infants (9 to 17 months) is to inspect the environment for possible hazards. I do this by making sure that there are no small items laying around that the children can choke on. I make sure that there are no sharp objects that the children can fall and hurt themselves on.

My goal for toddlers (18 to 36 months) is to keep the environment safe for their exploration. I check all toys and furnishings to see if anything is broken or chipped. If anything is, I discard it immediately. I make sure that all of the cleaning supplies are stored in a locked area out of the reach of the children. When it’s time to go outside to play I survey the area to make sure that there are no sharp objects so that the children cannot hurt themselves.
